Gold DOC is a recognition program established by The Arnold P. Gold Foundation to give patients an opportunity to pay tribute to physicians who demonstrate exemplary sensitivity and compassion, as well as clinical excellence, in the care of patients and their families.
So often we hear about the negative side of healthcare – medical errors, controversy over managed healthcare, diminishing time for the doctor-patient relationship, lawsuits and soaring insurance rates. In the midst of these difficulties and obstacles, we know there are many doctors practicing humanistic, patient-centered medicine.
A Gold DOC embodies these attributes:
Integrity: the congruence between expressed values and behavior.
Excellence: clinical expertise.
Compassion: the awareness and acknowledgement of the suffering of another and the desire to relieve it.
Altruism: the capacity to put the needs and interests of another before your own.
Respect: regard for the autonomy and values of another person.
Empathy: the ability to put oneself in another's situation, e.g., physician as patient.
Service: the sharing of one's talent, time and resources with those in need; giving beyond what is required. |
