Dr. Arnold P. Gold, founder of The Arnold P. Gold Foundation, received Picker Institute’s Annual Picker Award for Excellence ® in the Advancement of Patient-Centered Care. The award, which includes a cash prize, was presented at the 22nd annual National Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care in Orlando, Florida. Picker Institute is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of the principles of patient-centered care and the global patient-centered care movement.
Upon hearing of his selection for this prestigious award, Dr. Gold had this to say, “I am deeply humbled by the wonderful honor of receiving the Picker Award for Excellence. It is particularly rewarding to know that this award is meant to highlight role models.” When asked about the foundation he created, Dr. Gold said, “It was for my patients and their families that I started the Gold Foundation, whose work for more than two decades has been to humanize medical practice to improve the quality of patient care.”
Receiving Picker Awards along with Dr. Gold were Paul D. Cleary, Ph.D., and Atul Gawande, M.D., M.P.H. Dr. Cleary is dean of the Yale University School of Public Health and chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health. Dr. Gawande is a Boston-based general surgeon, staff writer at The New Yorker magazine, and best-selling author of several books including his most recent, The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right.
The Picker Awards were established in 2003. “Our mission is to make the patient’s experience, whether in a hospital or a doctor’s office, a better one,” said Lucile O. Hanscom, the executive director of Picker Institute. “The Picker Awards are intended to honor people and organizations who have made significant contributions to achieving this goal, and to highlight them as role models for others in the healthcare field.”
The Gold Foundation partners with the Picker Institute to offer challenge grants to enhance compassionate, patient-centered care in residency education. For more about this joint effort, please click here.
